Selecting Scholarly Articles

The abstract, the summary at the beginning of the article, will help you determine if the article is relevant to use for this assignment.

A scholarly article should have the following criteria:

  • Are the authors listed have solid credentials? For example, are they affliiated with a research institute or a university?
  • Is the length of the paper at least four or more pages?
  • Does the paper's composition contain an introduction, methodology, discussion/results, and conclusion?
  • Does the article have citations throughout the paper? Is there a strong bibliography or reference page?
  • Is it written in formal, technical language?
  • Are charts, graphs, and diagrams included to communicate results of the study?

Scholarly articles are also typically peer-reviewed. This means that the editor forwards a submitted article to experts in the field. These experts (or "peers" of the author) evaluate the quality of the paper and check for accuracy and for proper research methods. The article will only be published if the research paper passes through these standards.
