Library of Congress Classification System

A system created by the Library of Congress, which is used to identify an item within a library collection by dividing information into subject related groups. A unique number/letter code (call number) is assigned each item in the collection.

Where Are the Books on American History?

DeWitt Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system.  Books on American history are located in the following sections:

  • E11 - E904: Works on American and United States history, including Native American history
  • F1 - F975:  Works on local history
  • F616 - F630: Works on local history of Iowa
  • PS1 - PS3576:  Works of American literature, including diaries, letters, memoirs and the like

All sections are located on 2nd floor of the DeWitt Learning Commons.
